The island of Zirje is the farthest island of Sibenik archipelago with the surface of 15.43km2. Its name probably derives from the former thick forests of the Mediterranean oak the fruit of which is called zir.
The history of this island is very old as owing to its location it served as an outpost back in the past. Already in the 6th ct. a fortress was built here the rests of which are still visible on Gradina, the site above the Velika Stupica bay as well as on the Gustijerna hill above the Mala Stupica bay. Many traces of the ancient forts prove the importance that Zirje had as a strategic point of this region.
The historic documents say the the Croatian king Petar Kresimir IV in 1059 gave this island to the Benedictines. After that the princes of Bribir gave it up together with the island Murter, to the inhabitants of Zadar who turn it to the possesion of Sibenik in 1323.
The church of Velika Gospa built in 1480 is a valuable historic monument.
During the reign of the Venetians, some noble families from Sibenik had their property on the island but in 1572 during the Cyprus war, in spite of the resistance of the inhabitants the Turks completely devastated the island. Much later, during the Homeland War, in the nineties, Zirje became important again because from the top of its hills Sibenik was defended from the air, sea and land attacks.
Its relief is very interesting as it spreads longitudinaly with two high hills on the axis and in between them lies a wide, fertile field. The indented coast is additionally embellished by the rocks and islets. Olives, wine grapes, figs and plums are cultivated on the island and the sea is rich with fish. Besides, you can often enjoy in dolphins playing in the open sea.
Many inhabitants left the island in the last decades searching for better life. Some moved to the mainland, others emigrated mostly to the Americas and some became sailors. Today's inhabitants besides agriculture and fishing begin to deal with tourism. The accomodation can be found in family houses scattered over whole island and in picturesque bays very well known to the yachtsmen as they come here on their cruising the Adriatic when they need a safe berth. On the other hand, more than 20 kilometres of arranged cycling paths (asphalted, field and mountain), as even more walking paths are the occasion for the recreation of different types, weight and duration. All other visitors can use the ships that connect Sibenik with the island as many want to spend their holiday in peace and quiet of this remote island.
