This smallest and most densely populated island of the Sibenik archipelago, is unique in many things. It is only 300m far from the mainland where Brodarica is situated. Besides its small surface of only 0.36km2,
it is the lowest island on the Croatian Adriatic - 1.5m above sea level! It is unique for its inhabitants, too who are known sponge divers.
Its history begins in 1435 when it belonged to the church but was bought out from it by the Juric family and donated to the Bosnian Franciscans. Immediately upon their arrival the Bosnian Franciscans start building the monastery and the church. Soon after that, friars from the St.Gerry' Province replace them and are still here. In the 15th ct., in front of the Turkish invaders, many refugees from the hinterland find safety on the island. In 1523 the building of the church was completed and its former walls were incorporated into the new church built in 1937. In the present monastery many exhibits are kept to testify the life on the island during the past.
The former inhabitants of the island were exclusively agricultors but their fields were on the mainland. Besides fishing, in the 18th ct. they began with sponge diving. Traditional hunting technique with the harpoon used in shallower places in 1893 was replaced by modern diving equipment and at the same time they founded sponge diving association. Sponge diving tradition still exists thanks to skilled and hard working sponge divers but also to the extreme beauty and quality of the Adriatic sponge.
The inhabitants of Krapanj, especially younger ones, although they are employed on the mainland they have not forgotten the traditions of their native island. Moreover, valuable cultural heritage like, books, sponge collection, corals, amphoras, crockery from antiquity
and the beautiful stone houses with the narrow streets attract many visitors who will be accomodated by the cordial hosts in their family houses and will be offered local gastronomic speciality.
